What is the STEM Ambassador Program?

The STEM Ambassador Program is a statewide initiative by the Nevada STEM Coalition and partners, designed to connect students with volunteers who use science, technology, engineering or math (STEM) skills in their majors and careers.

Volunteers register on the STEM Coalition website with their availability, interests and skills. Teachers contact the Coalition when they need speakers, project participants, or contest judges. Training is offered for volunteers who would like more knowledge about what to share and what kinds of activities enhance the new Nevada Academic Content Standards.

Volunteers control their time- one hour a year or more!

Why is the STEM Ambassador Program so Important?

All 9 of the Governor’s economic sectors require STEM-related skills, but Nevada industries cannot find the STEM-skilled workers they need. Becoming a STEM Ambassador helps inspire our youth and will help build Nevada’s diversified economy.

Most jobs of the future are going to require some STEM skills, including computer use, coding, mathematics, basic scientific literacy, using technology, and more.

q&a

Q: Do I need experience working with students to talk to them about my career or college major?

A: No.  Ask lots of questions, share products and equipment, and be enthusiastic!  Don’t give a long PowerPoint presentation, but pictures and illustrations are great!  We will offer optional evening workshops to help you understand what students are learning and how you can help them learn about careers in their subjects.
Q: Do I need a special background check?
A: With increasing security required in schools and for our insurance, we ask for a basic “background screening.”  This is a fairly simple process using your drivers’ license and no fingerprinting.  We will come to you to get the paperwork filled out.  The paperwork is processed either by Washoe County School District volunteer office (free for ALL state volunteers) or we will give the application to your local school district to process.
Q: I am very busy. How often would I have to volunteer?

A: You control your availability.  Even if you can only give an hour a year, we will respect your time.
Q: Can I pick where I volunteer?

A: You identify a district or city where you are available. You can always choose a particular school, but the goal is for teachers to contact us when they need speakers and we do a match.
Q: I have some great ideas for student projects in my specialty. Could I offer those?
A: Sure! Teachers can use your expertise in many subjects such as IT, mechanical engineering, biology, etc.
Q: Can I pick an age group?

A: Yes!
Q: Can I just help a teacher with STEM knowledge?
A: Absolutely! Our teachers have rigorous new standards to learn and teach.
